On July 5th, His Excellency Yasuhiro Atsumi, Ambassador of Japan to Jamaica, participated in a series of events organized on the occasion of NGO Peace Boat 120th Global Voyage’s visit to Montego Bay. Specifically, Ambassador Atsumi took part in the testimonial lecture by Ms. Terumi Kuramori and Ms. Junko Watanabe, survivors of Nagasaki and Hiroshima, respectively, held at University of West Indies Western Jamaica Campus. As this year marks the 80th year since the atomic bombings on Hiroshima and Nagasaki, Ambassador Atsumi expressed in his remarks Japan’s commitment toward a world without nuclear weapons as the only country that has suffered from nuclear bombings at war. Ambassador Atsumi then visited the special exhibition set up on Peace Boat which commemorates the Nobel Peace Prize awarded to Nihon Hidankyo in 2024.
The events, which were also participated by Her Excellency Shorna-Kay Richards, Jamaica’s Ambassador to Japan, and organized by the Women of Western Jamaica in Montego Bay served as an invaluable opportunity for people of Jamaica, especially those of younger generations, to directly hear the testimonial of the survivors of the atomic bombs.
