Traveling Exhibitions at National Museum from July 28 to August 23
2024/7/26

The Embassy of Japan in Jamaica in collaboration with the Japan Foundation and the National Museum Jamaica will hold a special exhibition at the National Museum from July 28 to August 23, 2024 to remark the 60th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Japan and Jamaica and JAPAN-CARICOM Friendship year 2024.
The exhibition showcases 65 contemporary netsuke (non-slip toggle). Netsuke are small handicraft objects whose production flourished in the Edo period (1603-1868). During that period, the culture of what is now thought of as Japanese clothing blossomed. It was customary to carry inrō (medicine containers), tobacco pouches, money pouches, and other items by suspending them by cords from the obi (a sash worn with kimono). Netsuke served as toggles, attached to the ends of those cords and slipped beneath the obi, to keep the items suspended on it in place.
You will be able to appreciate Japanese sophisticated skills and playful minds behind contemporary netsuke as well as its formal beauty and contemporaneity. Please come and enjoy it!
