On June 8, the Embassy of Japan in Jamaica and the University of the West Indies (UWI) hosted the Japanese Speech Contest 2024 with the cooperation of the Japan Foundation, JICA, Japanese Teachers Association in Jamaica , Japanese Society in Jamaica, JET Alumni Association of Jamaica, and support of APIC. Japanese Ambassador Atsumi and Dr. Teresa Villoria Nova, head of the department of Modern Languages and Literatures at UWI gave the opening remarks which was followed by presentations of 14 participants. The speech topics were “My favorite Things (Level 1)” and “The Environment/Tourism/Energy (Level 2)”. This year, in commemoration of the 60th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Japan and Jamaica and JAPAN-CARICOM Friendship year 2024, a master level was established and the speeches were about “Jamaica, Japan and me”.

In addition, the UWI Japan Club sang and danced to introduce Japanese culture, Mr. Seiveright, who is currently studying in Japan on a Japanese Government Scholarship, gave a video message, and Ms.Gaynor, Foreign Service Officer of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade, who visited Japan under the programme of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Japan “JUNTOS!! Japan-Latin America and the Caribbean Exchange Inbound Program” gave a presentation.
