Handover Ceremony for Grant Aid in Improving Cold Chain in Jamaica

On December 7, 2021, the handover ceremony was held to commemorate the first shipment of cold chain equipment to Jamaica to support Jamaica’s COVID-19 vaccination programme. His Excellency, Mr. Masaya Fujiwara, Ambassador of Japan to Jamaica, Dr. the Honourable Christopher Tufton, Minister of Health & Wellness, Senator, the Honourable Leslie Campbell, Minister of State, Ministry of Foreign Affairs & Foreign Trade and Ms. Mariko Kagoshima, UNICEF Jamaica Country Representative attended the ceremony.

On April 27, 2021, the Government of Japan decided to extend Emergency Grant Aid of 11.1 million USD regarding support for cold chain development in response to COVID-19 pandemic in six Latin American and Caribbean Countries including Jamaica, as a “Last One Mile Support” Initiative to ensure vaccination in each country, through the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF).

Grant funding in the amount of $1,220,000 USD was allotted for the Government of Jamaica to purchase cold chain equipment such as cold-storage facilities and capacity building to support the equitable access and distribution of COVID-19 vaccines across Jamaica and enhance the Ministry of Health and Wellness’ National COVID-19 Deployment and Vaccination Interim PLAN.

Today's 85 cold box handing over is just the beginning. Vaccine refrigerators, vaccine carriers, other types of cold boxes, remote temperature monitoring devices and Japanese vehicles - with refrigeration capacity - will follow.
