Message from Ambassador (April 2016)
2016/4/1

Welcome to our homepage.
It has been just one year since I arrived in Jamaica as Ambassador to Jamaica on April 4th 2015. For the past year, I am very happy to see bilateral relations between Japan and Jamaica have been progressing in a consistent and steadfast way, particularly with last year's historic visit of Prime Minister Abe, which was the first ever visit to this country by a Japanese Prime Minister.
I also witnessed a very important moment in Jamaican politics this past February. The elections for the House of Representatives were held on February 25th, approximately four years since the previous. As a result of this election, the Jamaica Labour Party (JLP) commanded a majority by a narrow margin of 32 to 31 out of 63 parliamentary seats, and returned to power since it handed over office to the PNP after the 2011 elections.
Mr. Andrew Holness, who had assumed the premiership for a short period in October 2011, was sworn in as the 9th Prime Minister of Jamaica on March 3rd of this year at King's House. In his inaugural speech, he stated his administration's aim is to achieve economic growth and significant job creation.
Prime Minister Holness appointed his Cabinet consisting of 18 ministers, and he took on the newly created portfolio of Economic Growth and Job Creation as well as Defence. Senator Kamina Elizabeth Johnson-Smith was appointed the first female Minister of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade of Jamaica.
After the government's inauguration, I paid a courtesy call on the Most Honourable Prime Minister Andrew Holness and the Honourable Minister Kamina Johnson-Smith respectively. I told them that Japan wished to further develop and expand our cooperative relationship based on the three-pillar policy to CARICOM as Prime Minister Abe reiterated in his visit to Jamaica September last year. Both Prime Minister Holness and Minister Johnnson-Smith expressed their strong expectation for further enhancement of bilateral relations with Japan, and extended their appreciation for the support Japan has made to Jamaica over the years.
I sincerely wish the new Government and people of Jamaica every success in their endeavours.
