Message from Ambassador (April 2017)

2017/4/1
Our website has been redesigned as of April (2017) this year. I hope that you will find it more convenient and helpful in learning about our activities and relationship with the Commonwealth of The Bahamas.

It has already been about two years since I presented my credentials to Her Excellency Dame Marguerite Pindling, Governor-General of the Commonwealth of The Bahamas, and started to work as full-fledged Ambassador to the country. Although I am stationed in Jamaica, I am hoping to continue visiting The Bahamas as much as time allows.

Japan and The Bahamas have been developing their friendly and cooperative relations since the two countries established the diplomatic relationship in 1975. Looking back over the recent VIP visits to each country, Mr. Takashi Uto, Parliamentary Vice-Minister for Foreign Affairs visited The Bahamas in June 2015, the year of the 40th anniversary of Japan-Bahamas establishing diplomatic relations, and had a meeting with the Honourbale Philip E. Brave Davis, Deputy Prime Minister & Minister of Works and Urban Development. From The Bahamas, Deputy Prime Minister Davis paid a visit to Japan in February 2016 at the invitation of the Government of Japan. During the visit he had meetings with government officials including Mr. Yoji Muto, State Minister of Foreign Affairs and also visited some facilities such as a shipyard and renewable energy. Furthermore, in April last year, I signed the Exchange of Notes with the Hon. Frederick A. Mitchell, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Immigration in Nassau, for the Japanese Grant Aid project to contribute to measures against natural disasters. The signing ceremony took place in the presence of Deputy Prime Minister Davis and Mr. Manabu Sakai, State Minister of Finance who visited the country to attend the annual meeting of the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) in Nassau.

Grant Aid projects have not before been implemented in The Bahamas as the country was regarded as a high income nation. This project has been made possible as a result of Prime Minister Abe’s announcement of the intention to provide support to countries from perspectives other than those based on per-capita income.

As seen from the above, the relationship between the two countries is developing in a steady way. The Embassy of Japan to the Commonwealth of The Bahamas will continue to do our utmost efforts to further expand our friendly and cooperative relations. Your kind support and understanding will be highly appreciated.
