Sumo wrestling, the traditional Japanese sport (Japan’s
national sport), has a history spanning more than 1000 years.
As it used to be held as a way of giving thanks for harvests and
in other religious ceremonies, sumo still involves many rituals.
Two very large wrestlers, wearing only thick, heavy, belted loincloths
made of cotton or silk (mawashi), try to throw each other down
or push each other out of a straw ring.
