Government Scholarship
Japanese Government Scholarship Programme

To date, some 55,000 students from approximately 145 countries and regions around the world have studied in Japan under the Japanese Government (Monbukagakusho) scholarship programme established in 1954.

Each year, the Monbukagakusho (Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science, and Technology, Government of Japan) offers scholarship to a Jamaican graduate to study as a research student to conduct specific research proposals at Japanese universities in the fields of the Humanities, Social Sciences and Natural Sciences. Applications are usually available each year at the Embassy in March and deadline for application is usually in May .

Applicants must be under 35 years. The term of this scholarship is 18 months to two years (including 6 months of Japanese language studies). Applicants must be university graduates. The study area should be the same field that the applicant has studied or a related field.

2010 Application Forms can be downloaded here .

Sumo

Sumo wrestling, the traditional Japanese sport (Japan’s national sport), has a history spanning more than 1000 years. As it used to be held as a way of giving thanks for harvests and in other religious ceremonies, sumo still involves many rituals. Two very large wrestlers, wearing only thick, heavy, belted loincloths made of cotton or silk (mawashi), try to throw each other down or push each other out of a straw ring.
